Adventures in 6th Grade

Welcome to Math Class!

We began our school year  by creating a math project called "The Math In Me". Students shared numerical facts about themselves, in mathematical equations, and created beautiful projects that are displayed in the 4th floor hallway.
It was  inspiring for me to see how all the students were all  engaged as they made up mathematical expressions to equal the facts they were expressing. Students used exponents, and multiple operations  in their work. They enjoyed the projects and are proud to see their projects hanging in the hallway.
As they worked on the projects they also readjusted to the school environment and were reminded of important work habits:  following directions,  planning first,  checking their work, working independently, asking for help when necessary, working quietly, and  putting away their supplies when done.
We have been finding the prime factorization of numbers and we have learned to use the prime factorization in order to find the GCF of 2 numbers. We learned the rules of divisibility to help us when we are finding the prime factorization, as well as in many other math applications that will arise throughout the year.
Wishing you all a Shana Tova.

English Language Arts

Dear Mazel Parents,
The year has been moving so quickly and we are learning so many new things in 6th grade!
-- This week, we learned 20 new words in vocabulary and how to use them.
-- We experience what it means to brainstorm and group ideas for writing reports.
-- We did some great work in our reading workbooks
-- We wrote a log on Friday in class, summarizing our previous year, in anticipation for Rosh Hashanah.
-- We also started reading and discussing a new fiction story, Candymakers, by Wendy Mass and the kids are super-excited.
In the next two weeks, your child is writing a personal narrative/descriptive report. Ask him or her about it!

As always, I am honored to teach your child and if you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me at mendelberlin@gmail.com

6th Grade Science

The Mazel 6th Grade Class started out the year with a tumultuous bang, to the sound of remote control cars and quadrotor helicopters filling the room ... while also filling the class with learning and discussion about the nature of motion and force.  Students started to think like physicists while trying to describe and explain the different shapes of motion they observed ... trying to break them down to combinations of more basic shapes ... and then hypothesizing WHAT causes their cars, helicopters, and other everyday objects to move in these different patterns.  Deeper questions about forces, center of gravity, the nature of gases and our atmosphere then suddenly appeared in the form of a flying fish named Nemo ... and students moved from being scientists, trying to understand and describe what made Nemo rise, fall, tilt, and rotate, to being engineers trying to find a way to use that knowledge to "fix the fish" and make him do what we wanted him to do.  Frequent surveys made students think about, crystallize, and put their thinking into words ... and describe what they'd learned.  All in all, the 6th and 7th grades sprang off to an impressive start, with so much more on the horizon!

Social Studies

I was really impressed with the group work, quality of work and presentation skills of all our class as we explained the meaning behind our national anthem.
If you come by they are hanging in the  hallway on display.
Our geography unit has started and we are working hard on learning all about our land
Looking forward to another fantastic week ahead
